Habakkuk: Hope in Despair
Habakkuk 3: 16-19
Join us as we continue our summer sermon series journey through the 12 Minor Prophets titled "Into the Heart of God." This week, we are invited into the prayer life of one of the minor prophets, Habakkuk, as he wrestles with the impending destruction of his nation of Judah. Habakkuk ends with an incredible word of hope and trust despite what he and God's people are facing. What brings him to this place of faith and hope? What can we learn from Habakkuk when we find ourselves in that place of despair?

This week at Watershed:
Habakkuk – When It Doesn’t Make Sense
Habakkuk 3:16-19
In Habakkuk, we will see that faith is not something comprised of pithy sayings and dismissive platitudes. It is an honest wrestling with God about the realities we face and a decision to believe that God is who He says He is, even if we’re struggling to make sense of it all.

This week at Celebration:
Sermon: The Prophet’s Prayer Journal
Text: Habakkuk 3:16-19
Key Verse: Habakkuk 3:18 - Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
Sermon Snapshot: Habakkuk allows us to look over his shoulder at his Prayer Journal – a very different place than on the receiving end of a blistering sermon like several of the other Minor Prophets! From this place, we see the process of prayer – the heartfelt engagement of speaking and listening, lament and answer – leading to the outcome of that process: a Gospel-Transformed heart.
Congregational Singing This Week:
Rejoice, The Lord Is King
Before The Throne Of God Above
We Praise You, O God Our Redeemer
Music Specials:
Be Thou My Vision/ My Shepherd Will Supply My Need - arr. Brant Adams
Aiden MacDonald, Trombone
Jane Bosko, Organ
Prelude:
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.... arr. Paul Manz
Two Preludes on American Hymn Tunes: Amazing Grace and Nettelton - arr. Gilbert Martin

Postlude:
Postlude on Darwell 148th - arr. Brenda Portman

Nahum: God's Judgment
Nahum 1: 1-8
Join us as we continue our summer sermon series journey through the 12 Minor Prophets titled "Into the Heart of God." This week, we consider the word of the LORD from the prophet Nahum as he prophesies judgment against the Assyrian capital of Nineveh. We will wrestle with the tension found throughout the scriptures between God's mercy and God's judgment. What can this book teach us about this tension when read within the broader witness of scripture? How do these words find meaning in our context thousands of years later?

Jonah, Nahum & Nineveh
Passages from Jonah and Nahum
In the small books of Jonah and Nahum, we see how God interacts with the people of Nineveh. These messages invite us into the tension of living with the truth that Yahweh is both “slow to anger” and “will not leave the guilty unpunished.”
Stay afterwards for our Third Sunday Potluck.

Communion Sunday
We do not come to this supper claiming any merit in ourselves. On the contrary, we come testifying that we seek our salvation apart from ourselves and instead, in Jesus Christ. Form for the Celebration of the Lord's Supper II (1964)
This Week's Sermon Information:
Sermon: A God Who Is “Both/And”
Text: Nahum 1:1-11
Key Verse: Nahum 1:3 - The LORD is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished. He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm. The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet.
Sermon Snapshot: It’s hard to read Nahum and avoid the question of the LORD and anger. How can the prophet speak like that? Can the Triune God Himself really be that angry? How do you make sense of that sort of anger and “God is love”? When Jesus said He came to fulfill and not abolish the Law and the Prophets could He include Nahum? By God’s grace, questions can be often the doorway to some clarity, insight and answers.

Micah: A Call for Justice and Mercy
Micah
In his strong words against greed, abuse of power, and religious hypocrisy, the prophet Micah reveals the high priority God places on the most poor and vulnerable in any society. But Micah offers more than angry judgment. He also reveals God's character of patience, justice, compassion, and forgiveness. Thousands of years later, we are still invited to join the prophet in a response of humility, justice and mercy.

Micah and Leadership
Micah 3
As we explore the book of Micah, we will encounter God’s judgment against the misuse of leaders’ power, position, and privilege for self-interest. We will also be reminded of a different kind of leader who would rise up to lead people into God’s peace.

This Week's Sermon Information:
Sermon: The LORD Will Gather His Flock
Text: Micah - Selected Verses
Key Verse: Micah 7:18 - Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love.
Sermon Snapshot: Painful consequences are earned, but the LORD freely offers his grace to those who will receive what He offers and trust Him to deliver on His promises. Micah anchors his hope in difficult present circumstances by focusing on a coming Shepherd and surprising new kingdom. Because of where we are on the timeline of the LORD's salvation history, we understand more about that Shepherd and Kingdom than Micah could, but his hope encourages us to look forward to what he points us to.
