Exiles: Witness in Word
1 Peter 3:8-22

This Sunday we continue our sermon series through the New Testament letter of 1 Peter titled Exiles, where we have been considering these hope-filled words of the apostle Peter as he encourages the early church toward faithfulness in the face of resistance.  This week we consider Peter's call to be a witness even when direct opposition comes our way.  Peter encourages the church to use their words carefully while remaining consistent with a posture that emulates Christ.  What a timely word for the church of Christ in our current cultural moment.

Faithful In the Peace of Hostility
1 Peter 3:13-22

What can harm me if I am eager to do good? Actually, PLENTY of things can go wrong in this broken world, even when we live with the best of intentions. Amazingly, though, in the death and resurrection of Jesus, we find a sure hope and power to respond differently to the circumstances and persons that work to wound us. A response marked by humility, gentleness, and clarity becomes a powerful gospel witness.

Exiles: Household Witness
1 Peter 3:1-12

This Sunday we continue our sermon series through the New Testament letter of 1 Peter titled, "Exiles," where we have been considering these hope-filled words of the apostle Peter as he encourages the early church toward faithfulness in the face of resistance.  This week we consider Peter's call to be a witness in our most intimate relationships through our willingness to mutually submit to one another in love.  This was a countercultural calling in the first century and remains so today, but when offered in faith becomes a compelling witness to the world.

This week at Celebration:
The More Precious Way
1 Peter 3:1-12

Whether we talk about the Kingdom of God in grand terms or simple ones, it always shows up somewhere specific. For exiles living under an empire's pressure, Peter says it shows up first at home: in how husbands and wives honor each other, how the overlooked are seen, and how insults are answered. From there, the blessing reaches out to "all of you," and on to our neighbors and beyond. As we continue in Exiles, join us in 1 Peter 3:1–12 to hear what God calls precious, and come to the Table together.

Christ’s Example
1 Peter 2:11-25

We can’t offer the world a different direction if we’re playing by the world’s rules. This week, Peter will talk about how Christ’s character shapes how we show up in hard situations, hostile cultures, and powerless moments.

This week at Watershed:
Living Within and In Freedom
1 Peter 2:11-25

Peter makes an appeal to first century Christians to live within the systems and relationships that surround them, and in doing so also live in freedom and into the kingdom.  He points his fellow Christ-followers to Jesus as the ultimate example of the Christian life, the only one who truly lived both within and in freedom during his earthly experience.  We’ll be invited to consider how Peter’s words to his audience nearly two thousand years ago might be illuminated through the Spirit in our lives today.

Exiles: A Holy People
Peter 2:1-10

This Sunday we continue the sermon series through the New Testament letter of 1 Peter titled, "Exiles." Throughout the fall, we will consider these hope-filled words of the apostle Peter as he encourages the early church toward faithfulness in the face of resistance.  This week we consider Peter's call to the new church community to live as a new temple and a new priesthood.  We will explore what these images teach us about the people of God and how it informs what comes to mind when we hear the term - church.

Living Stones, Royal Priests
1 Peter 2:4-10

When Jesus declared He would raise the Temple in three days, He was pointing to a reality bigger than physical walls: His resurrected body and His redeemed Church. This Sunday, we’ll look at 1 Peter 2:4–10 to see how Christ, our Living Cornerstone, forms us as living stones and royal priests to be witnesses for Him in the world.

Cultivating Maturity
I Peter 1:23-2:10

Sometimes this world is a hard place to grow up. If the Gospel of God's Grace is good seed for a flourishing, Christ-like life, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by rocky soil, birds that steal the seed, and the dry winds of the season. Using our "Indicative/Imperative" lesson, Peter encourages to take steps towards the goal of maturity and a flourishing life as Gospel Exiles in a Broken World.
